SquareMeal Review of Hoxley and Porter

‘A mythical Victorian steam express from Cape to Cairo that brings together Colonial Poirot, Egyptian noir and surrealist jungles’… that’s the story at this new ‘cocktail and dining adventure.’ Still, strip away the Carry On Up The Congo stage set and focus on the convincing food and drink served by enthusiastic staff in fin de siècle attire. The menu offers Brit-accented grub at pub prices – think skate with salsify, pig’s cheek with chorizo, peas and broad beans or pot-roast rabbit with butternut squash and bacon. To drink, try baron’s tipple (overproof rum, lime, apricot jam and guava juice), Belize bellini or a smooth TT sazerac that prefers Santa Teresa rum to New Orleans rye. Otherwise, go for broke with ‘whatever doesn’t kill you’ – a far-flung drink featuring an edible absinthe-coated scorpion that changes colour from blue to bright purple.
