This casual, two-floor temple to meat is just off Exmouth Market and offers all the joys of proper South African barbecue, without having to stay outside. The custom-built, flaming braai fills the ground floor with aromas which BBQ addicts won’t be able to get enough of. The menu offers a selection of sosaties (skewers), steaks and potjies (stews cooked in cast-iron pots) which have all seen the fire, followed by its signature lamb ribs or boerewors (beef sausages), swordfish or perhaps spice-rubbed chicken wings. We were advised to order those signature ribs to share between two, which resulted in a hulking, crispy-skinned mass of meat which could easily have fed twice as many. That last fact makes this option a bargain, especially as it includes a ‘beer-can’ onion studded with little pickled onions. A side of mixed Heirloom tomatoes was a perfectly fresh and juicy foil to a potential smoke overdose, as is the basement bar’s house Gin Sour: our sparklingly fresh, well balanced serve demonstrated H&T’s commitment to great drinks. Our advice? Overlook the somewhat underwhelming location and bring an empty stomach for a thoroughly good-value BBQ feast.
