SquareMeal Review of Hacha Bermondsey

Bronze Award

It’s 2025 and London is officially mezcal mad. There are agaverias and tequila speakeasies all over the shop, but credit where it’s due, Hacha was there right at the beginning of London’s latest spirit trend. Indeed, the OG Hacha in Dalston remains the only acceptable place to finish a Dalston taco tour. Hacha Brixton has upped sticks (ton) and moved to a rather classy site in the Bermonds Locke hotel in Bermondsey (some may recognise that this was once home to Robin Gill’s Bermondsey Larder).

It’s a big open space, with concrete pillars and a gleaming metal bar that give Hacha Bermondsey much more of an industrial warehouse vibe than the warm, almost tropical feeling Dalston site. The planters are packed with towering cacti, which help to tie everything together. It’s a bit different, but it feels in keeping with Hacha’s slick, minimal drinks aesthetic. The famous Mirror Margarita leads the charge on that front - a cocktail so excellent that it has launched an entire supermarket-available brand. It’s still damn good. Hacha might be an OG these days, jostling for position in a city that boasts lots of outstanding mezcal drinking opportunities, but the Mirror Margarita is still right up there with the best drinks in the city. It’s so easy drinking, you only realise how many you’ve gone through when you stand up.

There’s a compact food menu on offer too, but it’s no afterthought. Corn ribs are often badly executed but these are excellent - tender, carrying a bit of char, with a spicy morita salsa to swipe them through. A series of classic tacos are also nicely done, though there are better in London these days. The best is an al pastor with lovely fatty pork and sweet pineapple, but all are more than acceptable for absorbing the tequila that is making its way into your veins.

The promise of a big summer terrace, Mexican barbecues and, yes, more of London’s best tequila and mezcal cocktails, has us very excited for Hacha’s future in Bermondsey. Long live the OGs.

About

Hacha Bermondsey is a sleek, vibrant bar dedicated to tequila, mezcal and the wider world of agave spirits. Tucked beneath the railway arches of Bermondsey’s buzzing beer mile, this south London outpost of the award-winning Hacha agaveria offers a more intimate, moodier take on the original Dalston bar – blending industrial charm with a cool, contemporary edge.

Inside, the space is warm and atmospheric, with candlelit tables, deep-toned interiors, and shelves lined with rare and carefully chosen agave spirits. It’s the ideal backdrop for sipping and exploring. Whether you’re new to tequila or a dedicated mezcal enthusiast, the knowledgeable team are on hand to guide you through tasting flights, signature cocktails and lesser-known regional spirits.

The Mirror Margarita – Hacha’s crystal-clear, award-winning take on the classic – remains the star of the show, but the drinks list goes far beyond. Seasonal creations, house infusions and creative highballs all feature, designed to showcase the complexity and depth of agave-based drinks.

Food comes from resident kitchen partners Maíz Azul, serving authentic and flavour-packed Mexican dishes. Expect soft corn tacos filled with slow-cooked meats, zingy salsas and vibrant veggie options, as well as seasonal specials and street food favourites. Taco Tuesday, featuring unlimited tacos for a set time, is a weekly highlight.

With its laid-back energy, inventive drinks and standout food, Hacha Bermondsey is a must-visit for cocktail lovers and foodies alike – a stylish, spirited tribute to modern Mexican hospitality, right in the heart of south London.
