SquareMeal Review of Haché Clapham

“Haché is reclaiming the burger for adults”, notes a fan of this modest family- owned chain, which eschews hipster grunge, lurid lights and thundering music in favour of sophisticated interiors, shaker-style walls, pastel shades and chandeliers. It may not be hip, but the burgers themselves are top-notch: served in soft brioche or crisp ciabatta and timed to perfection, they’re “freshly made, hot and tasty”. Around 20 different types are on show, and the sheer range is astonishing: the Italian-themed steak milano is a big hit, but you could also plump for a Louisiana (including a dollop of crunchy peanut butter), jerk chicken, Asian-inspired aromatic duck, pulled pork or falafel with sweetcorn. Sides are spot-on (try the sweet-potato fries) and desserts are of the gut-busting variety (sticky toffee pudding etc). Drinks range from ‘”reasonably priced” wines to boozy milkshakes.

Great value, good fresh choices of burgers.
A group of 4 of us ate on Sunday evening. We've been before, so now have sampled most of the burger choices. Lamb, pulled pork, fish are extras to the variety of steak ones; all freshly made, hot and tasty. Sides are particularly good – sweet potato fries worth noting; on the rocket & parmesan salad the slices of cheese actually tasted of cardboard, but that's the only complaint. Reasonable-priced wines let us eat (without puddings) for under £20 a head – well worth it! Oh, and we could hear ourselves think too in the absence of thundering music.

Hache is reclaiming the burger for adults. Hurrah! No wide, pram-friendly aisles, no bright lighting, no colouring books here. The atmosphere is cosy and sophisticated with chandeliers and candles but friendly and relaxed with banquette seating and close-set wooden tables. We sat happily supping prosecco for a while before our friend arrived and then we perused the lengthy list of burgers and side options. Service got a little muddled with one burger coming in the wrong bun and the wrong fries delivered, but these mistakes were quickly rectified, with profuse apologies and plenty of smiles, so it wasn't a problem. The burger itself wasn't half bad although it wasn't particularly amazing either: the meat was fine but the ciabatta bun fell apart half way through making it a fairly messy affair. Sides of onion rings in a tasty batter and skin-on chips were all fine too as was the nod-to-health side salad. I enjoyed the third of the chocolate brownie I had, but again it was pretty standard. So the food doesn't really grab your attention but it provides the perfect backdrop to a leisurely, relaxed evening gossiping with girlfriends. The bill came in at under £30 a head for a really solid meal (burger, shared sides, shared dessert) and plenty of wine (2 bottles between 3) which was good value for casual but very pleasant, child-free, night out.
