Chef Jason Davies and his wife Sue have produced an absolute cracker at this personable little restaurant in a hamlet just five miles north of Whitby. Their short, sharp menu sticks to a handful of
starters and mains, but always includes fish from local boats. You might begin with seared scallops, borlotti beans, wild rocket and red chilli or pan-fried lamb’s kidneys with Puy lentils, while
mains could feature baked turbot with porcini mushrooms on charlotte potatoes with parsley and lemon. Jason’s Dexter rump steak and chips with grilled radicchio and rich, herby salsa is also
memorable, and there are usually a couple of puds to finish – say pistachio and almond tart or a slice of chocolate truffle cake with orange ice cream. Booking is essential for this out-of-the-way
spot, but the trip is more than worth it.
