About

Tucked away in the heart of Highgate, Don Ciccio Osteria Italiana is a neighbourhood gem that brings the soul of Italy to North London. Whether you're planning a long lunch with friends or a cosy dinner for two, this charming osteria offers a warm welcome, genuine hospitality, and a menu full of rustic Italian favourites made with flair.

Inside, the atmosphere is relaxed and homely – the kind of place where guests are greeted like old friends and tempted by the scent of garlic, herbs and freshly baked pizza. The team here is passionate about what they do, and it shows in the quality of the food and the attentive, friendly service. Whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, you'll feel instantly at home.

The menu is a love letter to traditional Italian cooking, with a strong focus on fresh, high-quality ingredients and homemade dishes. Begin with a crisp, golden plate of deep-fried calamari, or share the creamy burrata with cherry tomatoes and rocket – a simple but irresistible starter. Pasta lovers are in for a treat, with dishes like spaghetti alle vongole and tagliatelle al sugo di cinghiale (wild boar ragu) showcasing rich, bold flavours.

One of the standouts is the tagliolini alla vodka con polpa di granchio – delicate homemade pasta with crab and vodka – or the indulgent ravioli ai porcini, served in a creamy parmesan and pistachio sauce. Vegetarians will love the Penne alla Norma or Don Ciccio’s Melanzane alla Parmigiana, a comforting classic done perfectly.

Leave room for dessert – the homemade tiramisù is a firm favourite, or try the affogato al caffè for something simple and satisfying. There’s also a refreshing fruit salad served with a scoop of house-made gelato for a lighter finish. Whether you're after a casual weekday lunch or celebrating over dinner, Don Ciccio Osteria Italiana offers an authentic taste of Italy in a setting that feels like a local secret worth sharing.

FINDING FRESH FISH IN NORTH LONDON

Personally, I am always impressed by a restaurant which has a good choice of fish on the menu and I don't mean the usual salmon steak or grilled prawns. Which is why I was impressed by Don Ciccio in Highgate,  as I found an exciting choice. The Sicilian heritage of this Italian restaurant is obvious, and I found Sicilian Octopus, Baked Swordfhish Rolls, Fritto Misto - some dishes served with Sicilian Caponata.  The Sicilian Octopus was tender and fresh, very tasty. A restaurant which is not open on a Monday to me always means that the fish has just come in freh on a Tuesday, when the first fish deliveries of the week are made. I also liked their Caprese Salad, with the addition of capers, a lovely kick of flavour on the palate. Next time I want to try their Linguine Lobster. Until it's warm enough, the huge glass doors are open and it makes the place even brigher than it is. I liked the Sicilian Ceramics, in keeping with the restaurant. Not cheap, but not too expensive either and the food was really good. I would return.
