SquareMeal Review of Death + Victory

Bronze Award

Unveiled in 2018 as part of this popular converted warehouse’s revitalisation, Death + Victory conjures up a sexy Stateside speakeasy. Nevertheless, at Smiths of Smithfield’s repurposed first-floor space, any such dream proves fleeting as the building’s open-plan design makes for extremely clattery acoustics on busy evenings. Drinks, though, are fair enough – if slowly dispatched on our visit – and cocktails are linked (sometimes tenuously) to Smithfield’s rich history. Scottish Braveheart William Wallace, executed nearby, is commemorated in a Tequila, lychee and rose-liqueur Sour. The bar fancies itself a ‘destination’ and although it is sure to pack ’em in, for the same price as you’ll pay here for a Lucky Escape (vodka, Campari, grenadine, pink grapefruit juice) or Monkey Went To Market (a gin and apricot Sour), we’re minded to escape deep into the famous meat market itself, to Oriole – a genuinely intimate destination cocktail lounge to rival anything in America.
