Definitely worth a butcher’s, Brewer’s Bar has been remodelled from the bare bones of a shop that once supplied sausages and beef shin to Shacklewell. It’s run by ex-TV producer-turned-carpenter Cal Smith (his bespoke furniture can be ordered here), who has imaginatively restored the quaint, poky premises to reflect their Georgian past. Pile-in for draught ale from Bermondsey microbrewery Partizan, along with Partizan’s bottled beers such as lemon and thyme flavoured Saison, Mosaic Chinook IPA, porter and the bittersweet, smoky, dark-chocolatey stout. Cider is supplied by Hackney heroes Crate, and the selection of mainly French artisanal wines by the glass and bottle (from £15) includes elegant un-oaked Chablis, Champagne (Marie Demets brut at £38) and robust, ruby Madiran (£24) which works well with the cheeses from La Fromagerie (three for £8). Bizarrely, given the venue’s past, Brewer’s Bar is a meat-free zone – but quirky and sweet nonetheless.
