SquareMeal Review of Zen China Bao Fa Garden

In a bustling tourist hotspot, Zen China serves a classic Pan-Asian menu. Instead of the usual fare that weighs down Soho Chinatown menus, you’ll find the specialities of Beijing province and its neighbours well represented. Freshly made noodles are prettily coloured with ‘natural juices’ of tomato, spinach and carrot, ’local-style’ appetisers are authentically served at room temperature (five-spiced marinated beef slices, for example), and king prawns come dipped in sweet and sour sauce and served on half a pineapple; also check out the Beijing duck tasting menu for a special treat. Decked out like an imperial dining hall, with calligraphy scrolls and opulent fabrics, the high-ceilinged room also boasts peek-a-boo views of Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The food is creditable stuff and helpings are plentiful, but reports suggest service needs a wake-up call.

We came here for Chinese New Year, as we felt it would be a lot more relaxed than putting ourselves through the ordeal of China Town. We were very pleased on arrival with the general relaxed and spacious feel of the restaurant and felt it lived up to the 'Zen' title. We were a little shocked at: A) the fact it was half empty on such a day B) the lack of any special décor or nod to occasion C) the friendliness and even slight familiarity of the staff (not something we are used to in most Chinese restaurants The building, being part of County Hall, has quite a municipal feel about it, and the décor was quite minimal and the ceiling was quite functional and plain. We felt that they could do an awful lot to make it even more welcoming and a lot more luxurious. The views are stunning, so it's a bit of a shame that that more isn't made to take advantage of that. The food was pretty standard Chinese, and a bit lacking in inspiration too, but nothing terrible. Again, we felt an awful lot could be done to improve both the décor and the food. But overall it was and enjoyable experience. However, the place could definitely be taken up a few levels, and I'm sure it would quickly become far more populated.

Whilst the food was reasonable and plentiful, the service rather average, and the atmosphere was a little stale. This place would probably be better when very busy, but with very high ceilings when its quiet it felt empty. Its worth noting that the discount on prices is incredibly restricted, and I didn't see the exclusion of the set menus on the website, so was surprised when this was explained on arrival. Overall, its alright with reasonable food, but I've certainly been to better Chinese resturants.

Zen China right on the River was really good. Went there fore a girl's dinner – ate tons of really delicious food which was beautifully presented and prepared, had wine and with a tip only came out to £30 a head. Really lovely service and the view of Westminster was stunning. highly recommend.

The private dining room at Zen China seats 20-30 guests and is partitioned from the main restaurant, to add some extra buzz while maintaining privacy. Expect excellent views of Big Ben, which makes this a very popular choice for New Year’s Eve.
