SquareMeal Review of XOXO

XOXO is closed permanently
Defunct gay bar The Green has been replaced by a sleeker, smarter, proposition in the shape of narrow, low-lit lounge/restaurant XOXO. Tricked out in dark woods with mushroom upholstered booths and ruby panne velvet armchairs, it stays open late and should pull in a good crowd – it is slap in the middle of weekend party central, Upper Street, after all. What it promises is a combination of draught Tuborg lager, accessible wines and a long list of mid-priced cocktails, bolstered by a concise Thai menu that runs from bar snacks of chicken satay, dim sum and seafood (steamed scallops with coriander and soy dressing) to various curries, spicy salads and stir-fries. Given the plethora of past launches/failures on this strip, any new arrival’s guarantee of success is at best 50/50 – much like the outcome of a game of noughts and crosses, as suggested by XOXO’s name.

26 August 2012

I visited the restaurant on Saturday 25th August 2012 and had a very pleasant evening. The food was very flavourful, tasty and reminded me about the exotic food I had in thailand during my last holiday. The staff were very attentive, friendly and showed lots of professionalism. The cocktail menu had a great choice of beverages and I will admit that I fell in love with the XOXO Mojito. Great value for money as well as – two cocktails for £10 before 8 pm. After slashing on the food and cocktails, the waitress proposed us to stay for the evening as they had DJ from 10 pm to 2 am. She even proposed and recommended us some very nice liqueur and we tried the XO patron which was stunning. After 1030 pm some of my friends joined the venue and we were proposed some free shots. The night was getting better and better. The DJ was amazing, everyone seemed to having a good time. We had more shots during the night namely traffic light and some others which were recommended by the lovely barstaff. Guys, this is the latest venue to be on the weekend, I can't stop praising XOXO to all my friends. I will definitely be there next weekend. Great food and service, excellent customer service and value for money!!! XOXO we love you…

29 May 2012

I visited XOXO this weekend (26 May 2012) and was appalled by the service and value for money. The actual surroundings were very nice, decor was modern and they had a DJ playing great music… however, the staff were extremely rude and non-attentive. I asked 3 different members of staff for a glass of tap water and eventually had to visit the bar myself in order to get it as I was waiting so long. The other downside was the tiny portions, we had a set menu which had many delicious dishes but they were so tiny we left there starving. The customer service and tiny portions really let this establishment down which is a shame as it has great potential in the right hands. I would suggest new management with more of a customer focus and bigger portions. Unfortunately, I would not revisit this restaurant.
