SquareMeal Review of What's Cooking?

For fabulous views over Liverpool’s Three Graces – that group of elegant waterfront buildings marked by the Liver Bird statues – hungry visitors and locals head for What’s Cooking?, the longest established (since 1978) restaurant at the Albert Dock. The focus is on Tex-Mex cuisine: fittingly for a city that launched so many voyages to the New World. Portions are cowboy-sized, on plates as big as a Stetson, and served in booths equipped with personal TVs. Food is simple and hearty (the likes of burgers, burritos and steaks), with slow-roasted ribs falling off the bone and arriving bathed in tangy barbecue sauce. Desserts are huge too: a warm chocolate brownie comes with caramelised toasted marshmallow and baked Alaska, for those diners who can resist Ben & Jerry’s ice cream and sundaes. And don’t forget the bar, which serves the best cocktails on the dock: many a good night in town starts here.
