Well Bread Bakery & Café

SquareMeal Review of Well Bread Bakery & Café

One of the latest additions to the Isle of Wight’s burgeoning food scene, this cinnamon-scented artisan bakery and café sits right on Cowes’ main thoroughfare. It’s a welcome sight for hungry sailors, who drop in for thick, toasted ‘doorsteps’ cut from enormous crusty loaves. Grab a pew, sit at one of the two communal wooden refectory tables, and slather your DIY toast with butter served in large wooden bowls, before spreading it with jam or marmalade, scooped from equally large dishes. If you have room, round off with one of the homemade croissants or a Chelsea bun straight from the oven – and be sure to take a slice of apple pie for later. Otherwise, return for a bowl of chilli con carne with bread – a staple of the limited lunch menu. Freshly ground caffeine hits come courtesy of the owner (a coffee importer).

Don't give them your money

This place is a by-word for rudeness, poor value for money and bad hygiene. The woman who runs it clearly hates her job and resents the customers who insist on interrupting her to buy over-priced, stale scones and loaves of bread. Trays of cakes are left uncovered, there are flies everywhere and service is slow. London types clearly find it 'rustic' and quirky but locals won't go near it. Theres a much nicer, cleaner, friendlier alternative down the high street. Save your money.

Don’t give these people your money

Whilst the produce is pretty decent, it does not make up for the perfectly dreadful and down right rude staff.

One of them actually manhandled my children whilst harassing my mother in law into deciding what we were choosing.

The dreadful and vile staff will make your trip here a misery.
