Waitrose Wine Bar King's Cross London bar

SquareMeal Review of Waitrose King's Cross Wine Bar

Psychologically bruised from a tussle with some supermarkets’ adversarial self-service tills, you need a stiff drink. If you’re shopping for Chablis, chorizo and ciabatta in King’s Cross, you’re in luck! Set in the former Midlands Railway’s Grade II-listed goods shed, which has been sympathetically converted to play up its heritage, Waitrose’s snazzy new branch boasts a full-scale wine bar – a concept trialled at its Canary Wharf superstore. On a list of around a dozen and a half wines, a glass of chilled house white (Pays d’Oc Sauvignon Blanc) and own-label Champagne cost £3.25 and £5.95 respectively. Ridiculously affordable, it’s perhaps best to drop in after you’ve shopped, lest you go wild in strategically merchandised aisles. Pick up a bottle of Pinot Grigio, Prosecco, Pouilly or Picpoul from the comprehensive in-store range and enjoy it in the bar – open all day until 10pm – or outdoors in a courtyard. A beer tap dispenses Camden Hells – as well as filling up Victorian ‘growler' bottles to go – and there’s a selection of premium-brand bottled brews and ciders to enjoy with salads and DIY cheese, meat, fish and deli platters from £5.95.
