SquareMeal Review of Vinoteca King's Cross

Sip a pre-prandial sherry while you survey the convex bar, bulging forth to welcome you in from King’s Cross – the fifth outpost from wine wonders Vinoteca. Sit near the open kitchen for a glimpse at what's to come or punt for a table near the in-house wine shop and enjoy enthusiastic chatter from clued-up staff. Stylish wood and tables sans clothes tell you you’re in smart casual territory and groups of post-work drinkers coexist nicely alongside date-night duos. The menu comes with a selection of smartly-chosen wines and there's an extensive list for the curious. Start with crispy spiced Cornish squid, paired with a cava to cut through the creamy aioli before settling in to glorious steak bavette with a stack of enormous golden brown chips – crispy, salty and fluffy in the middle. Whole mackerel with piquant pickled vegetables is a light delight but you should ruin your diet with panna cotta and rhubarb – poached in pink moscato, of course.

An addition the original Marylebone mini-chain, Vinoteca King's Cross doesn't suffer from a reduction in quality or ambience. I imagine it would be extremely easy in this location to be rather lazy, assuming that most diners passing through will be never-seen-again tourists. But the welcome was warm, the service was attentive without being intrusive and they were very happy not to turn our table enabling us to while away the afternoon and of course spend money on wine! We had the great value set menu for lunch and the food was truly yummy, with fresh fish not overwhelmed with butter and a fresh, crisp salad starter. They are really happy to accomodate allergies and are fairly vigilant about it, which is great. The best thing is that you don't feel like this is a "waiting room" for people catching trains. It has a warm atmosphere and you do forget the location. As with all Vinotecas, the hard wooden seats are still penitential!

Pretty wine bar with a great list and decent service. Let down by a very expensive by-the-glass list (go for a bottle from the full list, it's definitely worth it), plus my vegetarian courgette meal was delicious but very overpriced. Far prefer the offerings on Granary Square (Caravan, Grain Store, Dishoom).
