SquareMeal Review of Counter Vauxhall Arches

That Vauxhall should have a destination restaurant would have sounded like an oxymoron a decade or so ago, but so successful has the renovation of the area been that it now seems normal that Counter should take that moniker. Making use of one of the many old railway arches and serving a comfortable mix of American and French cooking including blackened chicken, rainbow carrots and charred corn or brioche bun burgers with swiss cheese, the kitchen has plenty of bases covered. You can also expect skate wings, clams, samphire and beure blanc, alongside well-constructed salads. Guests sit up at the long, beautifully lit counter or snuggle in to a booth for more privacy, quaffing cocktails and decent wine; swap wine for Bloody Marys when the weekend comes round for brunch. Fancy Italian? Counter has now got that covered too. Use the back entrance to discover Counter Termini, which serves up wood-fired pizza, salads and antipasti, every day from 11:30am.

Travel to Vauxhall for this one, lucky locals! Set in a railway arch literally less than a minute's walk from Vauxhall railway, tube and bus stations, step through the glass doors into a glittering, lively and warm world. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and our booth was private and comfortable. The setting is great, and crosses a traditional brasserie with something more glamourous, without being too posh. Food was utterly delicious. I opted for their duck liver parfait to start and followed it up with a steak. The wife had the parfait too, followed by their burger. The parfait was flavoursome and rich without being heavy, really nicely presented and made a perfect kick off to the main event. My steak was cooked to a T and my wife loved the burger, ably assisted by me! The wine list was varied and had a few we didn't know. We went for one of them which was, unusually for us, an American wine (they have loads) and we really enjoyed it! From their cocktail list, their Vauxhall Vesper was knockout and we finished our dinner off with a delicious espresso martini. A real treat! We'll be back!

I probably spend too much time here. It is what Balans is to Soho, Riding House Cafe to Fitzrovia or Balathazar to Covent Garden. A great all day venue. While nestled in a railway arch right under the station, you feel more like in Manhattan once inside. American style service, New Yorkish food (in a good way) and some of the sharpest cocktails in town. It is all very swish and sassy with a high level of energy (helped by the cool 70s sound track they have on). The booth are fantastic for breakfast meetings while the long brass bar is great for after work drinks.

Counter is close to my gym so very convenient. A good-looking place - the bar looks like it was lifted from the ex Lo Profile in Soho. We ordered steak, the ribs and the sweet potato and herb dumpling mains. £22.50 for the steak frites but the steak was grisly and unappetising. Neither of my companions liked their selecions either. A pity as Vauxhall badly needs a good, contemporary, reasonably priced restaurant.
