SquareMeal Review of Union Square

A loving homage to the wild west in the heart of the 02 Centre, Inc Group’s latest bar/restaurant keeps enough of a lid on the cowboy gimmicks to prevent it resembling a novelty eatery from Disney World’s Frontierland: expect a big wooden bar & walls hung with taxidermy & native American portraits. The quality of food on offer in the first-floor dining room is better than the 02 setting might suggest, with the shellfish cocktail & hamburger impressing on a recent visit; elsewhere on the menu, steaks & salads are supplemented by comfort food of the shepherd’s pie & moules-frites ilk. A decent global wine list has reasonable choice around the £30 mark (as well as some exemplary bottles aimed at corporate high rollers breaking the £200 barrier); cocktails made from premium spirits are mixed in the ground-floor bar. Efficient staff, meanwhile, keep with the American theme by exuding a nothing-is-too-much-trouble friendliness.

Having made a reservation on Squaremeal (SM) to eat at Union Square a couple of hours before the concert my friends and I were attending and also having had an email confirming our reservation you can imagine our disbelief when we turned up to be told that there was no reservation! I asked to speak with the manager who quite frankly, couldn't give a damn and told me that all links between Union Square and SM ended over a year ago and that I shouldn't of been able to book through SM and that I should have telephoned Union Square direct – this I pointed out is what I tried to do first but constantly the telephone rang out which is why I ended up on SM unaware of course the relationship between SM and Union Square had ended! I listened to what the manager said but by no way accepted it or that it made any sense to me so then asked for a table as we were expecting our last friend to arrive in from abroad but was told that the restaurant was busy and he couldn't seat us but maybe we could go on a reserve list which “might” mean we could have a table in an hour which then wouldn't have left us with enough time to eat before the concert. I find this totally unacceptable and quite frankly a farce given that I had received my confirmation email which again meant absolutely nothing at all to the manager I saw. IF Union Square had in fact, ceased trading with Squaremeal then surely it would make sense for Squaremeal to take all links relating to Union Square off their website but maybe that's me just asking for too much. All in all, a complete and utter shambles and thank you Zizi for coming to the rescue!

I made a reservation through Open Table to have dinner at this restaurant last night before a concert at the O2. While Open Table, a VERY reputable company, emailed a confirmation of the booking, when we arrived, the restaurant had no record of our reservation and told us that they stopped working with Open Table over a year ago. They were unable to accommodate us without a reservation and didn't appear to be sorry about the inconvenience caused at all. Very disappointing!!!

Sorry, you cannot spend SquareMeal vouchers here yet.
