About

Head through a shabby-looking entrance under Holborn Viaduct, down a corridor, through swing doors – and under dimly lit, cathedral-like brick arches you’ll find oenophile magnet, The Winemakers Club. Championing innovative small producers who embrace biodynamic and organic principles, this shop-cum-‘wine pub’ also supplies the highly regarded likes of Sager + Wilde with its deeply drinkable delights. Australia, France and Italy make for happy hunting grounds. From the latter, stonking 2014 Cantina Ribelà Frascati Superiore DOCG – offered, like all bottles, at retail price (in this case, £24) plus £10 corkage – comes from a list that culminates in patrician claret at just over £100. Choose from a dozen or so perfectly kept by-the-glass options on rotation: an earthy Hungarian red made from Kékfrankos grapes, perhaps. ‘Meet the producer’ soirées are a regular draw. A concise selection of bar food includes charcuterie or cheese plates, bruschetta, and a raclette toastie.
