Squaremeal Review of The Richmond ?

The opening in Hackney of such a classy neighbourhood eatery as The Richmond is a mark of the area’s gentrification. This cosy bar-restaurant comes from Brett Redman (of Elliot's, Borough Market) and Margaret Crow (a fashion stylist from Texas). Seafood stars on a menu that combines Mediterranean enticements with more home-grown recipes. Oysters are just £1 a pop in the oyster and raw bar during happy hour (6-7pm Mon-Fri; 5-6pm Sat). Otherwise, kick off with the bite-sized crab, muffin and espelette butter starter (a princely £8), with the floury, pillowy muffin oozing fresh, flaky crab. Mains also offer plenty of fish options, alongside the ubiquitous burger and steaks. Lamb arrives pink and tender on a bed of sweet crushed celeriac, accompanied by a meaty jus boosted with tangy anchovies; seafood stew is transformed by the salty-spicy notes of ’nduja. Desserts might include a sharp, light lemon mousse topped with sweet wild strawberries and a dusting of crushed pistachio, or banana tart with crunchy, sugary pastry. Natural wines are a feature of the drinks list, along with cocktails (try the refreshing Sage Against the Machine). Staff also earn bonus points: they’re so lovely, you’ll want to return just to say hello.

An oyster catch!

Editor's pick As it was the start of October and Oyster season is in full swing, we decided to stay local and have the bivalves than hit a more usual suspect. Having read the reviews, we plumped for the Richmond. The hostest was charming, smiley and affable which is always a good start, taking her time to explain (with tasting notes) the 7 different types of oysters on offer.     The Richmond is a new gastropub just down the road from trendy Dalston Junction that has recently been launched by the stylist Mags Crow and chef Brett Redman. The interior is uncluttered with Tuscan tones softening the utilitarian pub interior.

    I’m sure that I am not alone in spending far too much time and energy when I first move searching out local bars and restaurants? The ideal neighbourhood restaurant for me is somewhere I feel comfortable by myself or with friends, somewhere with excellent food, an accessible wine list and perhaps a few cocktails. And, having moved it is particularly irritating to end up in somewhere that would definitely be top of my list if it happened to be on my doorstep.
