SquareMeal Review of
The Railway Tavern Clapham
On a busy corner opposite Clapham High Street station, this neighbourhood boozer aims to cater for all-comers with its mix of big-name beers and cider on tap, craft brews and wallet-friendly wines. A changing roster of breweries includes Hogs Back, Purity and Brooklyn, with alternatives provided by Carling and easy-drinking Aussie Shiraz. Food too ranges from crowd-pleasing ‘build your own’ burgers or fish & chips, to trendy small plates such as heritage beetroot salad with kale and goats’ curd – though the pub staple steak-and-ale pie with mash was the most reliable choice on our last visit. Sunday roasts are also offered, along with quiz nights and weekly deals such as Tappy Tuesday: £1 off all pints on tap. The look is comfortably down at heel, featuring mismatched wooden furniture, and staff are friendly. Upstairs, blue walls and large paintings create a relaxed vibe, and pavement tables allow for alfresco imbibing.
