SquareMeal Review of The Pembroke

This large, friendly & ‘beautifully decorated’ pub has become a local favourite since it was revamped from its grotty former incarnation as the Coleherne. Today, the interior is lit by giant chandeliers, there’s black & white floral-print wallpaper on the walls, & the large central island bar provides a welcoming focal point. The menu changes twice daily & is a mixture of pub favourites (chicken liver parfait, burgers, beer-battered haddock) & more upmarket choices such as Iberian charcuterie or homemade gnocchi. Sunday roasts ‘cost a few quid more’ than the average, but are hugely popular. To drink, various lagers are on tap, including Bitburger & Sagres, alongside an ever-changing selection of ales such as Broadside or Tribute. There’s also a moderately priced wine list. A sun terrace & upstairs lounge provide alternative hang-outs when the bar is busy, & a first-floor room can be hired for parties.

Terrible
Ordered pork belly. Well aware that this is a fatty dish but was served a block of pure fat without a shred of meat on it. Told waitress that you cannot serve people something so shockingly bad. My wife's dish was cold. The worst i've ever experienced. 20% was knocked off the bottle of wine we'd drunk waiting for an hour for our slop to arrive…great. We left and had a pizza in strada, so a bit dissappointing given it was our first night out in 6 weeks after the birth of our third child.

We live locally & were excited to see a new & beautifully decorated pub in our area. We frequently come here for our sunday night dinner, as do our friends. The menu is constantly changing & seasonal. The roasts are the best I've ever had from a gastro pub, although cost a few quid more… Always have yummy vegetarian options, as well as things like “Pheasant Stew” (delicious!) and Haloumi & Veg skewers (yummm!)… The wine list is good & they have an ever changing beer of the month which can be fun to try. The staff are friendly & young & funky. There is a DJ upstairs on most? fridays…
