SquareMeal Review of The Looking Glass

From the folk behind The Motorcycle Showroom in Bristol’s über-cool Stokes Croft neighbourhood, comes The Looking Glass – a performing arts venue and bar right next to St Nicholas Market (aka St Nic’s). Housed in a once-derelict 18th-century building that has been given a contemporary facelift, it now feels really cosy: frilly lampshades, a selection of fancy wine decanters lined up on the bar, vinyl discs strewn around an old-fashioned record player, and a changing rota of artwork help to give it the feel of someone’s front room – quite unlike most bars in the centre of town. A lovingly chosen selection of drinks includes ales from Wiper & True (a new, Bristol-based brewing outfit), alongside other local beers and a keen selection of whiskies. The owners invite drinkers to bring their own food from the market stalls, so have a chat with the quirky punters and enjoy the even quirkier arty goings-on.
