You won’t see Michael Caine sitting at the bar, and you don’t have to blow the (bloody) doors off to gain entrance, but you will find decent tucker and quality brews at the UK’s first Italian craft-beer pub. A thirst-quenching choice of 12 rotating draught beers vies for attention with equally enticing bottled ales. Sit on comfy leather stools at the bar – with its attractive turquoise chequered tiles – and watch ales such as New Morning, Extra Hop and Brett Peat being pulled. We occupied a rustic wooden table and enjoyed starters of aubergine, mint and Cheddar arancini; and courgettes filled with venison and truffles. Burgers (£10.50) are melt-in-the-mouth beauties, served with excellent crunchy fries and packed with flavoursome fillings like bacon, Cheddar and red onion, with a cracking IPA reduction to pour over. Desserts might include the chef’s special ‘birramisu’, laced with Verdi Imperial Stout – a good Job all round.
