About

A bright, airy gastropub, The High Field is equally appealing for family get-togethers as for nights out with friends. Alfresco seating is a draw in summer, but the modern interior – a cosy space with quirky touches – also has its fans. The kitchen gives modish tweaks to the classic gastropub repertoire via an all-day menu. Breakfast of smashed avocado and poached eggs, or almond milk porridge, could precede lunchtime deli boards, burgers, salads, soups and sandwiches. At dinner we started with creamy potted crab, served with sourdough and punchy pickled cucumber, alongside an autumnal roast pumpkin and lentil salad with harissa and yoghurt. To follow, chicken chasseur contained well-cooked, free-range meat, though arrived with its rich sauce on the side, rather than casserole-style. Desserts are a highlight, as are the generous Sunday roasts. Thought has also been given to the drinks list, which features well-sourced wines, Spanish-style ‘grand gins’ and cocktails.
