Nunhead’s family-friendly café is now opening for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays. The local brunch and lunchery has become a religion for some, as a cosy spot to while away a morning accompanied by good coffee – from nearby Old Spike Roastery – and tasty, fuss-free food. So news of a ‘late-night Habit’ comes as a welcome surprise. The aromas emanating from the open kitchen at the back are promising, making it easy for us to forgive a small ordering hiccup resulting in an unsolicited starter of pumpkin scotch egg (it’s tasty, runny-yolked and crisply coated, so we’re not complaining). Mains of roast chicken with tarragon and crème fraîche and confit duck leg are also flavourful, but it’s the deeply chocolatey tiramisu cheesecake for which we’d consider making a regular pilgrimage. To drink, there’s a short yet accomplished wine and craft-beer list, plus a few good-looking cocktails. With so many encouraging signs, we’re praying the slow service is a temporary glitch.
