About

The George in the Strand is a historic pub found inside a Tudor-style building, originally an 18th century coffee house, just 10 minutes from the famous West End. The George pub is home to bar food and Sunday roasts, while upstairs, a newly refurbished first floor dining room is now The Pig and Goose, a sophisticated eating experience serving up classic British cuisine in fine dining style.

Walking into the George pub, you’ll find a traditional setting with red leather sofas, ornate carved fireplaces, and plenty of wooden accents, particularly the old-style bar lined with draught taps. Find some of the external Tudor panelling coming through, giving the pub a distinctive vintage feel.

At the George, you can sip on a range of craft beers, a rotating roster of 9 local and national real ales, and a selection of spirits and wines. The pub is perfect for those wanting to stop by for a pint after work, watch the latest sports fixtures during a lunchtime visit or simple pre-theatre dinner, but beware of the 17th century Cavalier ghost who is said to haunt its cellars.

The bar menu serves up traditional pub grub every day with choice of morsels to munch on with your pint, such as a Scotch egg and the homemade sausage roll. Move onto a light dish of smashed avocado on toast with chorizo and poached egg or half a pint of prawns with lemon mayonnaise dipping sauce. For something substantial, choose a classic roasted beef sarnie with mustard mayonnaise and watercress. Other mains include pork and leek sausages with mash and onion gravy or a smoked haddock and prawn pie. End with a dark chocolate fondant for pud or keep it British with Eton mess made with passion fruit and white chocolate.

If you’re visiting on Sunday, the George serves exquisite roasts with all the trimmings, including a butter-roasted Yorkshire chicken stuffed with sage and onion, and slow-roasted pork belly finished with a caramelised apple puree.

Excellent Sunday lunch

Fabulous Sunday lunch. First visit here and we loved it. Had the mackerel starter which was so delicious. Roast beef of course, excellent. Lovely wine, lovely service. Sat upstairs in the dining room, relaxing atmosphere. One tiny gripe, need to check temperature on the coffee machine, both coffees served promptly but cool. Otherwise, fab. X
