SquareMeal Review of The Gable

Re-launched following a makeover, The Gable now sports a long bar crammed with tables and booths, various rustic-chic themed rooms with names like ‘the nest’ and ‘the glasshouse’, sultry loungey enclaves and more besides. Sharing platters and nibbles are offered at the bar, while the full menu touts a mixed bag of soups, salads and sandwiches plus more substantial plates of char-grilled chicken with fries and mushroom sauce, macaroni cheese, Thai curry, fish pie, lobster burgers and steak-frites. The 50-bin global wine list (supplied by Justerini & Brooks) offers plenty of choice by the glass and a short selection of more prestigious vintages, while beers from the shiny metal spouts include Leffe and Beck’s Vier among others; there are also numerous seasonal cocktails, contemporary mixes, punches and shooters for the party crowd.

Had a lunch here mid week and the service was good and the staff were friendly. The food came out quickly and the lunch menu is very nice and good value. Exactly what you need as a mid week pick me up when on a tight time scale.

Until yesterday I would of never of thought that the Gable would be any good for lunch. My colleague had been raving about how nice the lunches were. I was very pleasently surprised to say the least, they have a fresh fish specials menu and all at a reasonable price, I paid £9.95 for a Tuna steak nicoise salad, everything was fresh and well prepeared. Need less to say I may have to make the Gable my regular lunch spot.

Happy Hour here buys you a bottle of Prosecco for a half price £12.50. In fact all the drinks are half price. However, disappointment awaits you if you get the munchies while taking advantage of the Happy Hour bargains however, and feel tempted to try a sharer plate here. £18 buys you a platter of synthetic carbs, which is supposed to serve 2-4 people, but really serves 1.5 people, and that's being generous.

THIEVES OPERATE IN THIS PUB.. !!! I went here for a drink after work and had my jacket stolen. It had wallet and phone etc in it. What really annoyed me was I was sat directly under a CCTV camera. I asked the bar manager if they could look over the footage. They said they didn't have time and couldn't help!! Clearly the camera's are there purely for their benefit. I asked if I could have the number of the police station and the manager huffed, walked away talking over her shoulder saying, I'll see what I can do. Rude. VERY rude. NEVER going back.
