SquareMeal Review of The Brown Cow

1

"GOOD"

Set up by the guys from the excellent Sands End nearby, this venue has taken on its sibling’s distinctive ‘country pub in the city’ vibe – and is certainly wowing the crowds. Hover by the bar and sup a pint or two of real ale or join the buzzy throng seated at bare refectory tables. Either way, the cooking takes its cue from its neighbour, with a tempting roll call of “consistently good food” running from charred mackerel with beetroot, coleslaw and vodka crème fraîche to Barbary duck breast with caramelised figs and blackberry jus, braised lamb shank with cavolo nero, and even Cumberland sausages with creamed potato. Desserts might feature warm banana and hazelnut cake, while the carefully managed wine list offers plenty in the £20-30 bracket. Nibbles such as mac ‘n’ cheese balls are available all day, and we’ve heard that Sunday roasts are a good call.

Monday night and recovering from the weekend. The Brown Cow was the obvious choice with great bitter, superb fish and chips and some of the friendliest bar staff and waitresses I have met. My week has now started perfectly and I'm now getting myself ready for their full English breakfast – now that's how you start the weekend

I love this place. Whether it's popping in for a quick drink with a friend after work or a day long lunch followed by early evening sausage rolls to soak up the wine! The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and personable – always happy to give recommendations also which I really appreciate. Not everyone is going love everything on a menu so some outside input always helps! Their Sunday Roast beef is genuinely the best pub roast I have ever had. Literally. Massive yorkshire, extra gravy on demand and beautifully cooked beef. Heaven. The ham egg and chips had me dreaming of ham for the following week… Dangerously addictive! A restaurant that also seamlessly manages to be a pub at the same time with neither drinker nor diner feeling put out or awkward in the presence of the other.
