The Bloomsbury Hotel’s recent revamp includes a 1920s pastiche mahogany panelled ‘library’, served by a snazzy drum-shaped bar stocked with premium brands. Bookish types will be intrigued by head barman Brian Calleja’s list that tenuously links new and retro cocktails to the avant-garde artistes of ‘The Bloomsbury Group’. In honour of Virginia Woolf, there’s Clover Club (right at £10) and for painter Roger Fry, Burra Peg (a Raj throwback and a classic Champagne cocktail by any other name). EM Forster is linked to High Society (a sloe-gin sip). Next door, in the twinkly gloaming of a covered verandah (and in a hobbity grotto off), choose from two dozen wines by the glass, accompanied by elegantly presented bar snacks: potted shrimp on toast, chorizo and chicken mini-burgers (£6.50), or addictive salt and pepper squid with a teriyaki dip. This inviting booze bunker below The Bloomsbury’s Dalloway Terrace restaurant is worth perusing.
