The Balcon 1

Squaremeal Review of The Balcon ?

Sitting neatly at the cross-section between tourist-land and serene St James’s, The Balcon is a place for daytime deal-making and night-time romance. Matt Greenwood (ex-Blixen, Caravan) now heads the kitchen, steering things deftly away from ‘hotel restaurant’ (the Sofitel is attached) to dining destination – whether for breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch or dinner. He has also trendied up the menu, adding touches of sumac here, a sprinkle of yuzu there. Pan-fried snails with chorizo and sweet-potato purée is the best starter. For mains, both the lamb with pearl barley and cavalo nero, and the crispy sea bream with laverbread beurre blanc and samphire are triumphs of classical cooking: pair them with glasses of Wairau River Pinot Noir and Languedoc Picpoul de Pinet, respectively. The food is respectable, if not entirely memorable, yet unfortunately the atmosphere doesn’t quite match the quality of the cooking. Nevertheless, Greenwood has made a promising start.

Editor's pick The Balcon, Pall Mall - walking into a champagne bar exudes the glamour. Big glass windows, high ceiling and flower arangements that set the style, The Balcon is part of the Sofitel London Hotel, with a separate entrance. I love a little poncieness in life. A place like that does not have too many waiters. No one would be seen doing nothing even when the rush hour crowd has thinned out. They will be polishing glass doors, have the tables laid out, interacting with diners and arranging bottles...

I went to the Balcon with 3 friends for my belated birthday celebration. Two of us arrived early and we had a couple of drinks at the bar with lovely nibbles. We then went to our table for dinner and we all had a fab time, the food was great and the service excellent! They even brought me a yummy dessert with a candle!! (On the house!) I just adore the place and I wish I could celebrate my birthday there every year!! Can't recommend it enough, lovely, lovely and I can't wait to go back! Sofia Baguley...

The Balcon, is new, great and fills an important gap in this part of Pall Mall. It is open all day. This idea of all day service is great for busy business people and the quality doesn't dissappoint. The kitchen is probably still fine-tuning a thing or two, but there is potential in heaps. The Champagne Balcon, is a funny feature and this place must be in with a shot at serving the greatest number of different Champagnes by the glass. An expense account does help, because this deepest SW1 and the...

Cooksister :: Cooksister: Le Brunch at The Balcon

Do you ever look at other people's Facebook feeds and feel just a little bit as if you are underachieving in your own life? That your kids aren't as adorable; your house not as perfect; your pets not as quirky or amusing; your holidays not as exotic; and your life just lacking in good old-fashioned decadence? Don't worry; I'm not going to tell you that the solution is to go cold turkey and cancel your Facebook account or stop spending so much time on Pinterest. There is a far simpler way to add some decadence to your life: go out for brunch. There is just something about having brunch that is subtly more decadent...

Tiki Chris :: The Balcon Sofitel St James Hotel

All the right points were hit seemingly with prescience during my recent dinner at the Sofitel St James Hotel’s Balcon resulting in one of the better restaurant experiences of my year thus far.
In many ways, The Balcon’s dinner menu appears as though it were written just for me – almost eerily so in fact. A starter course of pan-fried snails with chorizo, sweet potato pur&e, oloroso jus, and hazelnuts (&11)? That’ll do just fine thank you – and how did Chef Matt Greenwood manage to read my mind for a perfect way to commence a meal? Ditto on the roasted hake fillet, with ratatouille, green olive tapenade, and shellfish...
