SquareMeal Review of The Artisan Bistro

This handsome little bistro slipped under the radar when it opened early in 2016 and deserves more widespread acclaim. The narrow site is simply attired with bare tables and vivid artwork and also operates as a wine bar for locals (our G&T made with Surrey’s Silent Pool gin was a revelation); obvious TLC has gone into the 50-odd list of wines by the glass. However, it’s the modern European menu – arriving via the chef’s native Washington DC – that’s the draw. We started with Padrón peppers served with juicy segments of orange and a sherry drizzle, and also tried some excellent wedges of breadcrumbed aubergine. The undoubted star of the show, though, was a main-course lobster mac 'n' cheese: a rich, gooey, meaty bowl of indulgence. To finish, passion-fruit meringue was perhaps too sweet, but this was a minor slip. Great food and charming service make Artisan an accomplished little package.

I recently visited The Artisan Bistro and I can safely say I am impressed. The Hollywood Road located restaurant really went above my expectations; the service is impeccable, location lovely and food sublime. The squid ink polenta prawns would be my recommendation for starters, delicious, whilst the calamari is still great too. I also enjoyed the wine - a Pinot Noir, Vidal Reserve, Hawkes Bay. It was on the sweeter side but worked well for a red you can enjoy on a hot summers evening. Very impressed and cannot wait to revisit.
