SquareMeal Review of The Antelope

Tooting residents are lucky to have such a characterful pub to call their own. The Antelope (part of the Antic chain) is a proper boozer, where customers are welcomed whether eating or drinking. Both sides of the operation hold enticements: imbibers have the likes of Aspalls cider and Purity ale on tap; diners have interesting, yet not too ambitious food from a menu where own-made rillettes and lamb stew with mash share space with Gorgonzola ravioli and hake with aïoli. For pudding, ices come from the Battersea Ice Cream Union. Prices are fair, and quirky light fittings, groovy bar stools and a peaceful garden all add to the attraction. In the best local pub tradition, there’s even a ‘games room’ where occasional comedy, poetry and film nights are held.

At a friend's birthday dinner here last night on a long table in the back for around 20 of us. The food is solid gastrofare (squid starter for me, lamp chop main and a rather good choc chip tarte thingy with rumnraisin icecream). Whilst the meat could have been hotter and slightly better quality, I'll forgive them for not producing blow-you-away stuff, as it is after all a pub and we were a big group. They managed to bring it all out at once and juggle our many drinks orders, all with smiles. The atmosphere here on a Saturday night is buzzing and the decor helps the cavernous space feels cosier than you'd otherwise expect. At £35 a head for 3 courses and a belly full of booze, it's a good value night out.
