SquareMeal Review of The Star Inn, Lidgate

A cosy, traditional inn with a twist, the Star combines the snug, low-beamed roof and sizzling log fires of its 400 year-old heritage with a Spanish-led blackboard menu. Upon entering, expect to be hit with a tempting aroma of garlic, before being greeted by the enthusiastically table-hopping proprietor Maria Theresa Axon. Generously proportioned and vividly flavoured, dishes are authentically prepared – expect the likes of whole baby squid with garlic and chilli, hearty bean and chorizo stew; and Catalan spinach with pinenuts and raisins. Fish soup, too, is a big draw, while more ambitious mains range from delicate cod with garlic mousseline to robust partridge – all served with crispy, moreish patatas bravas. The atmosphere is infectiously friendly, Greene King IPA and local Abbott ale are available on tap, and the wine list boosts plenty of reasonably priced Riojas. The £10.20 two-course set lunch is a steal.

We had a lovely evening at The Star. The service was warm and relaxed. The wine flowed happily and the food was great. I would happily recommend The Star as a venue for a large party.

This is the first time we have been to The Star under new management…what a change. We were very impressed by the welcome, quality of service and friendliness of the locals who came and went throughout the evening. Good choice of locally sourced food competitively priced. Also very impressed by the acquisition of local art and sculpture…a beautiful bronze bull included.

The Star Inn has recently changed ownership and management and is now in fact a Free House. We had a three course meal and the food was just superb. We had pigeon and baby squid as starters, duck breast and Spanish Lamb for mains and Pannacotta for dessert. Delicious. The atmosphere was really welcoming and friendly and the staff was very nice and attentive. Will definitely go again. Must try the other main courses!

Following the village takeover, my family and I decided to try for Sunday lunch. What a differance. The atmosphere was great, full of locals enjoying the local beer, and good wine. The menu was much more reasonable and really good value for money. I had chicken liver pate, and it was one of the nicest I had ever tasted. It will take time after being so badly run down, but Lidgate village seem determined to reinstate their pub as being well worth a visit. Certainly we will be returning to enjoy more spanish food in this delightful 400 year old. It was a most enjoyable lunchtime
