SquareMeal Review of Sonny's Kitchen

Barnes locals who came here as teenagers with their parents now bring their own kids to this much-loved neighbourhood restaurant: the room may have changed its colours over the years and the kitchen has moved in different directions, but a happy, comfortable atmosphere still prevails – thanks to joint owners Rebecca Mascarenhas and multi-gonged Phil Howard. Menus change every session and the kitchen’s ambition is obvious: marinated octopus with burnt lemon and dots of dill-flecked squid-ink taramasalata makes an original and very moreish starter, while breast of guinea fowl sits indulgently on a luscious bed of sweet shallot purée with shimeji mushrooms. For afters, check out the peanut bar with banana ice cream. Old World labels dominate the wine list, with plenty by the glass and enough curiosities to keep the inquisitive oenophile happy. Set menus and simple Sunday suppers are the real bargains, although everything is terrific value.

Sonny's is back on full form and is now back to being one of my favourite restaurants in London. Food is a delight and the staff are charming and welcoming. Big turnaround. Congratulations Sonny's!!

This is my favourite restaurant in London, and it's my local. Fantastic reliable food and a great vibe. I do however miss the now defunct morning cafe at the front of the restaurant.

I’ve visited Sonny’s for a Sunday lunch. The staff and overall atmosphere was fantastic; however the quality of food was highly disappointing. Dishes were tasteless and overly expensive. I paid £15 for a gnocchi dish which contained approximately 5 gnocchi. I will not recommend this restaurant neither visit this restaurant in the future…

So depressing! Sonny's has lost all of it's charm. What used to be a delightful, charming and unique restaurant has decided to adopt the ubiquitous, bland and commercial style that sadly now adorns so many of our high streets. This place used to be a destination restaurant with soul that was run by passionate food lovers – sadly today it appears to have turned into a slightly up market gastro pub. Our food was poor – really poor – bland, over seasoned and lacking in any finesse – but what made it truly depressing was comparing it to what it has been for the last 15 years. I sincerely hope that the chef was just having an off day – and to his credit when we complained he did his all to try and remedy the situation with a very good passion fruit soufflé. Had it not been for that this review would have been much more scathing.
