SquareMeal Review of Skylon Grill

Occupying the same inviting riverside space as the more formal Skylon restaurant, the Grill rings the changes with tightly packed bare tables, wood floors and a varied menu of casual bistro staples and family favourites. Steaks feature heavily on a roll call that ranges from beetroot risotto and salmon fishcakes to shepherd’s pie and the ever-popular Skylon burger. The retro styling also finds its match in starters of prawn cocktail and eggs royale (with smoked salmon), while puds toe the line with raspberry cheesecake or warm chocolate brownie. Families, tourists and theatre-goers continue to praise the ‘buzzy atmosphere’, ‘great value’ and, of course, the views.

SKYLON GRILL is consistently excellent. Four of us had a 'birthday' dinner and were fortunate to be granted the requested 'window table'. One of our party is a British Airways Purser and regularly visits most of the European capital cities and restaurants, but she said London beats them hands down... especially Skylon's terrace restaurant, overlooking the Thames enjoying super food and wine!

The Skylon Grill makes a perfect post Southbank event supper. The service is generally efficient and quick, and not too fussy, but fails on a few details. The wine waiter appeared promptly and so did the wine but we struggled initially to get our food order taken. The food is good homely and filling but not particularly notable - perhaps you need to go to the main restaurant next door for that. But the room has a good vibe and offers good value for a quick meal.

We were really looking forward to trying the Grill after all the hype about this restaurant but in comparison with other places, it really is not that special. The décor is awful - you can see what they've tried to do but the overwhelming feeling is just brown and dull. The views are oversold as trees block pretty much all of the Thames. Both courses were nearly cold - and we felt very rushed as though they just wanted us off the table. On the plus side - the service was good if not a bit too speedy. Overall, it was really average - not at all pricey but have had much better meals for the money. What really kills it though is having to go out of the restaurant in to the Royal Festival Hall to use the public toilets - a real downer. Probably won't bother again and definitely would not recommend

As a regular user I have been disappointed from time to time but last night was very bad. The food was acceptable but the service was unacceptable. The restaurant does major pre-theatre business most evenings and should be able to handle this. Last night it did not. The wait between clearing the starters and the arrival of the main course was over half an hour and there was no explanation or apology until I complained. There had been some sort of problem in the kitchen which had effected most meals. The manager apologised but did not apologise for failing to keep customers informed or for not apologising until complaints were made. The manager did not appear to be doing anything during most of the time.

I love this location, one of the best riverside spots, however, summer evenings mean blinds closed so no view! I had a fair meal – Meat sharing platter (a la Jamie), we both had hanger steak with a portion of good chunky fries and a salad. The wine was nice but expensive for what it was £25 for a 500ml carafe( £9 for a 175ml glass). Unfortunately when the waiter was asked to split the bill to the two proffered cards he decided not only to bill different amounts but miscalculate! The Grill section where we booked offers a pre-theatre menu up to 18:30 but it was very poor and we picked a la carte. A good tip is to dine at 19:30 – 20-00 as this restaurant is very much pre and post theatre driven!

Three-course pre-theatre dinner at £23.50 per person was good value for central London. Excellent service, good food (although rather limited choices) and no feeling of being rushed – a 6pm reservation gave ample time to get to a 7.30pm performance at the National Theatre.

We arrived an hour prior to our reservation in the Grill, so had drinks in the bar area, which is very nice with a good buzz and we enjoyed the view of the river. With 30 mins to go to our booking, I asked if a table were to come free sooner, could they let us know. The waiter went to check and said it would be about 5 mins. Nobody came back to us at all so at 8 pm, I asked the waitress if we could take our table, which she checked and we were seated. Service at the table was pretty slow, the bread basket never arrived and it was difficult all evening to catch the waiters attention. A steak was served with no steak knife and we had to ask twice before one was brought over by which time we were halfway through the meal. it's not my first time dining at Skylon, but once again, I thought the food was fairly average and the service, worse. I would go back for drinks at the bar, but will give the grill/restaurant a miss in future.

Great tasting food, great service. We were never left waiting for anything yet nor did we feel hurried. We arrived early and there was a table ready for us which was surprising gven how busy the place was. Our waiter was very friendly and eager to serve or advise us on what to order and he had very good suggestions. The truffle macaroni cheese was amazing and has to be tried! I'd eaten out already that day so chose a salad but even that was beautifully prepared and tasted delicious.
