Scoff & Banter Kensington

SquareMeal Review of Scoff & Banter Kensington

This bar/restaurant concept is dedicated to what it calls ‘great British soul food’. During the day, the kitchen serves up soups, assorted sandwiches, sharing platters and some please-all mains such as rib-eye and chips or goats’ cheese and onion tart, while evening brings an extended menu of revitalised Brit classics. Kick off with a pressing of chicken and ham with pea vinaigrette, move on to shepherd’s pie with savoy cabbage, ham and eggs or organic salmon with shellfish broth, and round off with apple crumble or Eton mess. To drink, expect a well-spread list of international wines and some decent bottled beers. The Scoff & Banter moniker conjures up all sorts of socialising possibilities: grub and chat, food and conversation… you get the picture.

I rarely post reviews but having read quite a negative review of Scoff and Banter ( issues with speed of service, apparently) I felt it only fair to balance that with our very different experience. We'd booked for a very early pre-concert dinner, and chose the three course set menu. Food was good: unpretentious British style food, chicken and avocado salad, fish pie, Eton mess. Not a traditional Eton mess (whole meringue rather than broken, and ice cream rather than whipped cream) but good. Portions were generous (unable to finish the fish pie). Chose a cocktail I'd never heard of, 'the passionate' and enjoyed it (light and refreshing) Service was good and definitely fast enough without feeling rushed. Very good value at £25. Only thing I'm never keen on is the addition of 12 1/2% service charge. Would use the restaurant again and would recommend it.

I booked this restaurant as it was close to the Royal Albert Hall, if fact the restaurant offer a " Pre-Theater Menu" for those wishing to have a quick meal before a performance. I booked this on line, which was simple and easy. Arriving at the restaurant we explained that we had at most 1 hour and 15 minutes before the show started, they said this would be no problem. We were simply ordering a Starter and Main, to keep within the time limits we had. It took nearly 15 minutes to place an order, then after another 20 minutes wait they turned up with the main course!! They seem to forget the starter! The main course was then whisked away and a few minutes later the Starter came out! We finished our stater and within 3-4 minutes the main course arrived, again! I think it was kept warm while we ate the starter. we are now 65 minutes into our 75 minute schedule. The main course was consumed, rather hurriedly, then we waited for the check, and waited, and waited. This finally arrived but for another table, it wasn't our check. They explained they were sorry and would bring the correct receipt. At this point we gave up, and went to the cashier to be told that they had forgotten our receipt as well. We paid the receipt, which was still incorrect, but time was pressing. The restaurant had the audacity to include a service charge, which we paid because we had no time left to dispute the appalling service that evening. We were so late leaving the restaurant that we had to hail a taxi to the Royal Albert Hall and STILL missed the opening of the performance and had to wait until there was a break in the music before we were allowed to our seats. A very disappointing start to the evening. That said, the food, when it arrived correctly, was excellent. I will choose a different restaurant next time we visit.
