This classy lounge bar stands out among the national brands that dominate after-hours Reading. Low leather seating and dim lights create an intimate mood, but don’t come expecting a subdued hush;
proceedings are frequently boisterous, with only the premium drinks lending an air of exclusivity. Wine and beer are taken seriously enough, but it’s the vast selection of cocktails that has kept
regulars happy since 2003. Classics get a facelift here, with 8-year-old rum and Araku liqueur infiltrating an espresso martini, and single malt edging out the classic gin in a repackaged negroni.
Sahara’s bespoke creations also include a few award winners (a mix of bourbon, Cherry Marnier and black sambuca made top spot at the 2011 Jack Daniel’s birthday contest), and the tiki selection is
surprisingly extensive. On quieter nights expect table service; the rest of the time expect queues.
