Royal Standard

Royal Standard London Paddington bar restaurant

Squaremeal Review of Royal Standard ?

What was previously The Rob Roy, a corner pub popular with Scottish ex-pats, has been rebooted as the Royal Standard: a washed-brick ‘San Francisco loft-inspired cocktail bar’ on two floors. Some of the fixes listed – Tequila Sunrise, Sex On The Beach – are decidedly old hat, but hey, Caipirinha, Margarita, and Negroni are always in fashion (£8.50, cheaper during happy hour). Lounge on chesterfields over a pint of Estrella, Hoegaarden or Greene King Yardbird, or choose from more than a dozen wines by the glass (from £4.20 for Spanish Sauvignon Blanc or Tempranillo). The chef seems keen on retro crowd-pleasers, so you could start a meal with spicy BBQ wings or halloumi and vegetable skewers (with rocket pesto), followed by mains that might include tagliatelle, mushroom and spinach in a cream sauce (£10), steak and chips, or chicken escalope Milanese. Otherwise, fill up on nachos or sharing platters (meat or vegetarian).
