SquareMeal Review of Rhubarb at Prestonfield

Bronze Award

Owned by Edinburgh restaurateur James Thomson and out of the same stable as The Witchery by the Castle, Rhubarb is the destination restaurant at Prestonfield – a sumptuous hotel with a 17th-century pedigree, remarkable “Jacobean-meets-Gaultier” decor and impeccably tended grounds. The kitchen deals in highly worked contemporary dishes along the lines of hand-dived scallops with cauliflower, lovage, chorizo, apple dressing and confit lemon or roast Gressingham duck breast and seared foie gras with shallot tart, confit cherries, caramelised chicory and turnips. For dessert, poached rhubarb (of course) might appear with vanilla brioche and hibiscus custard. Prices are steep – especially if you start to plunder the extraordinary wine list – but two-course ‘light lunches’, theatre supper and the three-course table d’hôte should help to ease any financial pain. Be warned that Rhubarb is also hugely popular for weddings and other events.

A perfect Sunday lunch
Impressed from the moment we arrived, we were beckoned into The Stables where they were hosting a wedding event, offered a glass of fizz and told to have a look around, what a great venue, then we walked across the garden to the main hotel/restaurant where we were greeted by a peacock strutting his stuff and a friendly, kilted doorman. We were asked if we would like a pre-lunch drink and were taken into a very comfy lounge with a roaring fire and had one of the best G&T’s I can remember – Pickerings with a slice of grapefruit served alongside some home-made cheesy bites and nuts. We then wandered through to the dining room which was packed to the rafters and sat down to a superb Sunday lunch (£20 for 2 courses and £25 for three). We ate - celeriac soup with truffle oil which was fantastic, chicken liver parfait which apparently was “to die for” and Prestonfields own smoked salmon with horseradish cream, which was also very good. We followed that with Roast Angus beef with all the trimmings, which was everything Sunday lunch should be, crispy roast potatoes, an enormous yorkshire pudding and perfectly cooked vegetables. It was a shame we all had to leave for the airport as I could have sat there all afternoon looking at the view of Arthur's Seat and surrounding countryside. The staff were all friendly, efficient and helpful, we would love to come and stay here and get to fully enjoy their hospitality. Owned by the same group as the Witchery By The Castle, where we had a pretty dismal experience the night before – the owners should take note because clearly they know how it should be done.
