SquareMeal Review of
Regent Street Cinema (bar)
Renovated, splendidly refurbished and open again to all for the first time since 1980, this birthplace of British cinema (first screening moving pictures back in 1896) now features a foyer bar where audiences and the public can drink every evening and at weekends. Convene here for wines (from a list of over a dozen), beers, spirits, classic stirs and starry fancies such as whiskey sour, Humphrey Bogart, and Marilyn Munroe (sic), a White Lady in all but name. Then settle down for a nostalgic double-bill from the silver screen’s golden era – or perhaps dissect the meaning and merits of the latest arcane art-house flick. The indie cinema’s owners hope their smart mocha and cream art deco-style lounge will appeal as much to those in search of a cocktail as to those waiting to see Cocktail or some other cult revival. Whether ‘Regent Street’s secret bar’ will take off, given the plentiful number of full-on drinking venues within striking distance, remains to be seen.
