Not long ago, no one in their right mind would have opened a café/deli at Newhaven, but developments along Edinburgh’s coast – especially executive apartments – have changed the local demographics.
Right on cue, along came Porto & Fi. Sitting opposite the sea wall, it boasts neat, modern decor & offers everything from one of the very best breakfasts in the city (fabulous eggs
Benedict) to coffees, light lunches & full-on meals. It’s certainly more café than restaurant, with most punters dropping by for, say, fish pie with a glass of house white or some chicken liver
pâté with onion marmalade followed by chocolate & beetroot cake. The food is hardly experimental but it’s good quality – hence the place attracts a lively crowd of families, ladies who lunch
& others who fancy taking the sea air. At peak times (weekend brunch, for example), it makes sense to book.
