This newcomer is a burst of California sunshine, combining the vivid colours of David Hockney’s Malibu with the healthy and delicious cooking so on-trend in Notting Hill. Pomona’s occupies a handsome old building with a large airy restaurant open from breakfast to late, a funky bar, conservatory and sheltered west-facing garden. It’s a magnet for fashionable locals, drawn by an imaginative range of small plates, raw food and salads, plus gutsy mains for proper appetites. Sweet potato is wittily served as toast with creamy coconut labneh, avocado and gremolata prinked with lime and cilantro. There’s soft shell crab with smoked garlic and tarragon, hangar steak cooked just so with charred endive, while much-maligned Brussels sprouts are shredded and served with hazlenuts and blue cheese. Weekend brunch dishes include succulent pulled pork with chilaquiles rojos: crisp tortilla wedges smothered in punchy chilli sauce and topped with a fried egg. Desserts include a vegan panna cotta (best avoided) and a fabulously indulgent caramelised croissant and prune pie which does nothing for your diet. The drinks list has freshly pressed juices and smoothies, single estate teas and coffees alongside a decent wine list and some cracking cocktails.
