SquareMeal Review of Patara Hampstead

Bronze Award

Patara may be a chain, but there are very few Thai clichés to speak of. The sitting Buddhas and wood carvings formerly decorating its branches are being steadily (and expensively) replaced with a contemporary palette of greys and marine blues, accented with angular mirrors, feature lights and muted, modern wall art. The menu strives to be ‘authentically different’ and succeeds via innovative twists on tradition, such as pad thai tossed with lobster meat, say, or massaman curry made with fall-apart lamb shanks. Fragrant Thai flavours crop up in unexpected dishes too, with tofu slices glazed in tamarind and lemongrass, before being pan-fried and sprinkled with crisp shallots, for example. Look out, too, for signature dishes, from coconutty dumplings filled with caramelised chicken and peanuts, to ginger-marinated beef fillet stir-fried with chilli, lime leaves and tangy green peppercorns. Delectable vegetarian and seafood set menus and playful cocktails are also excellent.

first visit to this restaurant

my wife and I did not know Patara had opened in Hampstead but drove past the other night on our way home and spotted it, as we are lovers of Thai food and we were able to park, we went in to see if all the hype was worth it.

The staff greeting was very pleasant and professional and took our coats and then showed us to a table.

Once seated the waiter asked if we would like water for the table, yes we said, sparkling please.

having perused the menu we ordered.

Everything was delivered to the table very promptly , seemed as though it had been waiting inthe kitchen for us.

None of the dishes had much flavour and a couple were not even warm never mind hot.

Our dissappointment was such that we did not bother to complain , we just paid the bill and went.

Presentation icer substance
I thought this was very disappointing food, very expensive ..the mixed starter was made of a duck roll, was dry ...the other items were ok ...despite the pickled vegetables it was nothing exceptional .....the main courses were better ...over priced in my view

A welcome addition to Hampstead
Hampstead is not renowned for great restaurants, and this particular location seems to change hands frequently, but I hope this one stays. The food is great! We had the starters to share for 2, a good selection of delicious bites, and then the beef curry, the black cod and the sea, as well as Pad Thai and some broccoli. All very well prepared. The Viognier was good value at £25 a bottle. The service was friendly, if a little distracted. All in all, would recommend for a good meal out with friends.
