SquareMeal Review of
Paper Dress Vintage
By day, browse for vintage fashion (1950s frocks, 1960s frilly shirts and the like) and enjoy tea and cake served on colourful mismatched china. By night, pull on your glad-rags for an East End knees-up as this funky clothes shop transforms itself into a bar and social. The instant the dress rails are tidied away, stylish owner Hannah starts pouring classic pre-batched gin, rum, whisky and vodka cocktails (courtesy of Bethnal Green bar, Craft Cocktail Co), along with beers by Crate, Hackney and Pressure Drop. The first-floor men’s department, served by a second (microscopic) bar, morphs seamlessly into a live lounge; its small stage hosts rockabilly, soul, blues and swing artistes – when the room is not otherwise given over to jive lessons, comedy, burlesque, cabaret and drawing classes. There’s even a wee garden in which to model the 1970s Chelsea Girl halter-dress, sun hat and shades you’ve just acquired.
