With wonderful views over the wooden sailing ships moored in the Albert Dock – and beneath the watchful gaze of Liverpool’s famous Liver Birds – this glitzy bar-restaurant is a great place to embark on a journey across the Americas. The menu is centred on robust Tex-Mex flavours (penne Mexicana, barbecue ribs), but adds a few South American dishes to the mix. An elegant sea bass ceviche arrives as three slabs of marinated fish resting on a bed of sweet-potato skins, with a tiger’s-milk dressing of the marinade to offset the delicate flavours. Mojo lamb cutlets are served towering over light and creamy mashed potato, with a punchy rosemary jus. Locals meet under these elegant brick arches to begin a good night out, and visitors take-in the grandiose architecture of Britain’s largest group of Grade I-listed buildings: Pan Am’s mezzanine restaurant is an ideal spot from which to admire Liverpool’s maritime heritage.
