SquareMeal Review of Orrery

This D&D London-owned, Conran-era classic has celebrated its 21st birthday with a gentle refurbishment that has effectively kept the grey-toned colour scheme the same as before. It remains one of the most elegant dining rooms in London, especially pretty at lunchtime when light floods through the arched windows overlooking St Marylebone churchyard, and in summer when the rooftop terrace is one of the capital’s best-kept secrets. Chef-patron Igor Tymchyshyn has worked here since 2008 and hasn’t ever deviated from the restaurant’s modern French template. Starters of perky cured mackerel with cucumber and horseradish or a really excellent Dorset crab with mango and wasabi might be followed by a signature tournedos Rossini with almost as much foie gras as steak. A trolley whiffy with 30 well-kept cheeses has always been what the place is most famous for – as too a 22-page wine list with some big names among the two dozen by the glass, with fine wine prices slashed on Mondays. Service is as formal as the business-friendly setting of well-spaced, white-clothed tables demands, without losing sight of friendliness. A set menu (£39) with four choices per course avoids the stiff cost of the à la carte (£59), while the tiny bar is a rare for the area cocktail spot.

Went to Orrery for lunch with a colleague on Thursday and what a lunch it was! We were welcomed at the entrance and had our coats taken, and sat down with menus. We ordered drinks and were left to decide on the food - with many dishes sounding good it was rather hard to decide. For starters my colleague had wild garlic veloute (soup) with poached egg and unusually shaped round croutons, she said it was very good. I had seafood ravioli in lobster bisque - absolutely delicious! The ravioli was only one (raviolo) but it was big and generously stuffed with a mix of seafood, and the lobster bisque flavoured it even more adding creaminess and roundness to the dish. For main my colleague had fillet of lamb with seasonal vegatable which she described as the best she's ever had! I went for roast cod with white asparagus and morels - a lovely combination. Cod was cooked perfectly and was flaking easily but was still firm and full of juice, the veluote (juice) at the bottom of the deep plate was the perfect finish. And what a great atmosphere - very light, with big windows that look out onto a green square, and lots of mirrors to reflect that natural light and allow the people sitting with their back to the windows to also enjoy the view. The service was top notch with attentive and knowledgable waiters always at hand. Will definitely come back and would recommend to anyone! Especially for a great value set lunch!

I live in London and love dining out.The Orrery is a real favourite of mine and my first choice when I have friends visiting or want to celebrate. The service is excellent – attentive but relaxed – the menu choice excellent and the food delicious. I also love that there is plenty of light on the restaurant and the terrace is a hidden gem. Great value.

I had not been to this restaurant in Marylebone High Street for about 12 years but by chance was there last week. I went with no preconceptions remembering my last time here was not overly successful. However all the parts that make for a really nice evening were there. The room was contemporary and clean, tables nicely spaced and greeting warm. We had the tasting menu which was excellent. The waiter looking after us was knowledgeable and very pleasant. The manager came to have a few words at intervals during our evening and was also cheerful. We left with the warmth of having been well watered, fed and looked after. Had no idea where 3 hours had gone.

Ultimately, this restaurant has been one of our favourite destinations for great food over ther years. Unfortunately though it appears that although the ambiance and service are still uniformly excellent, the quality of the food has diminished. The food wasn't poor, but considering it's previously justified strong reputation, the standard of ingredients and execution of the dishes was in the main, wholly unremarkable. We left underwhelmed and a little disappointed.

I took a friend to Orrery last week for a birthday supper, which she really enjoyed, having never been there before. I have visited several times in the past, for lunch as well as dinner, and have always enjoyed the interesting food, atmosphere and service. Once again, the menu was enticing, with enough choices for my guest who is a non meat eater. The food itself was beautifully presented and delicious – all too often, dishes that look beautiful in other restaurants taste of very little – but that was definitely not the case here, as everything was bursting with flavour. The little extra between courses mouthfuls were also lovely and made the whole meal feel more special. Overall it was good value considering the quality, and for when feeling more budget minded, the lunchtime set course menus are just as good and astonishingly great value. Recommended.

We booked the special offer “Menu du Jour”. The quality of the food at that price was unbelievable. The service was excellent and the staff struck the right balance of friendliness and professionalism. Will definitely return!

Last night 4 of us had a really good meal at The Orrery. The service was excellent; we felt cherished, although it wasn't terribly full. We had chosen the 3 courses for £26 and the menu was much better than the usual heavily restricted and rather uninspiring menu one usually finds on a set menu. What we had was universally delicious and there were lots of lovely extras: amuse bouche ( a foamy mushroomy thing and although this fluffy food is always a little bit silly, it was delicious ), Pre dessert (less impressive but nice nonetheless) and petit fours (really good). All round a very good meal.

I have eaten at the Orrery several times in the last year and its always fantastic . The service is attentive and personable but not intrusive . The food is great ,if you enjoy fois gras the starter is sensational and the panna cotta a peice of thoroughly skilled preparation. I would happily eat here until the end of my days .

Orrery is a gorgeous venue for groups of eight people and over. Your party will enjoy excellent service and sensational food in the buzzing atmosphere of the main dining room or you can opt for the intimate private dining room, which is flooded with natural sunlight during the day and atmospherically lit at night.
