SquareMeal Review of Olde Starre Inne

Walking down scenic Stonegate, it’s hard to miss the Olde Starre Inne – a huge banner advertising the premises stretches the width of the street and has become synonymous with neighbourhood. Indeed, the Olde Starre is reckoned to be the city’s oldest licensed premises. Visitors reach the bar via a narrow, whitewashed alleyway, which opens out into a pleasant courtyard. Inside, there are various cubbyholes and snugs, as well as a more expansive bar area offering real ales from the likes of Adnams, Black Sheep and Butcombe, plus a full complement of lagers, wines and cocktails. Meanwhile, the kitchen dishes up a predictable roster of wraps, sharing boards, build-your-own burgers, salads and suchlike. Certainly, the place is steeped in history, though the nostalgia is somewhat undone by live sport on the TV and two fruit machines by the door.
