SquareMeal Review of
The Dining Room at The Oakley Court
Set amid the Windsor countryside, this 118-bedroom country pile is ideal for weekend getaways. The Dining Room is its prime attraction, offering a seven-course modern British tasting menu (there’s a £30 three-course option too) served by cheery staff in bright surroundings. Much produce is sourced locally, if not grown in Oakley Court’s gardens or smoked in its smokehouse. To start, St Ives bay crab was flaky-fresh, scattered with hazelnuts and peas – perfect when piled on homemade wild-yeast sourdough. Follow with al dente asparagus before tucking into top-notch ibérico pork strewn with purple sprouting broccoli, creamy ajo blanco and heady wild garlic: proper, hearty fare. To finish, blood-orange sorbet with miso and coriander was a slightly left-field dish on an otherwise well-considered menu. Creativity is also applied to the cocktails, where classic mixes are enlivened with decorative flourishes; a solid collection of Old and New World wines provides admirable back-up, too.
