SquareMeal Review of Nordic

With its year-round wintry theme & twinkly Christmas lights, it would be easy to dismiss Nordic as a Yuletide novelty bar. But this low-lit, Scandinavian-focused basement joint embodies the warmth & party spirit of Lapland & beyond, mixing casual midweek vibes with serious schnapps-fuelled revelry at weekends. Other shots also do the rounds, from modern concoctions of homemade toffee or chilli vodka to traditional aquavit, while long drinks have a distinct Nordic twist – lingonberries giving a fruity lift to Absolut vodka, for example. For stomach-lining ballast, look no further than a smörgåsbord of nibbles, a mighty plateful of homemade kottbullar (Swedish meatballs) with mash, or pytt i panna (a wholesome bacon, sausage & potato hash topped with an egg).

A friend and I stumbled across this place by accident and what a discovery! We, and the rest of our friends are now hooked. It's like Christmas every day at Nordic Bar! The twinkling furr trees make it a winter wonderland beneath the streets of London. The walls are adorned with various Skandinavian images from reindeers to fake furr rugs and scenes of Skandinavia itself. The menu is excellent and has all the traditional Scandinavian dishes you'd expect to find, from DIY Smorgasbords to meatballs with mash and jam. Absolutely delicious. But the best by far, in my opinion, is their amazing fish and chips. The fish is meaty and flakey and coated in light, tasty batter and served with chunky chips sprinkled with sea salt and rosemary. On the side is a little ramikin of mushy peas. Perfection on a plate. Everything is served beautifully and the waiters are polite and friendly. They are there when you need them, but leave you in peace to enjoy your meal as well. The bar is funky with it's low level lighting and funky coloured cube lights. Behind the bar are the usual array of beers and spirits, but they also have a great selection of cocktails to choose from, all served up in frozen glasses. It's got a great atmosphere too, it's full to the rafters at lunch times with people making the most of their lunch time food offers and in the evening various areas are booked up for private functions. I love it, it's simple, cheap and funky. A great find and i'd happily reccomend it to anyone.
