SquareMeal Review of No 13

It’s not a place people stumble on, but you’d be wise to venture the couple of hundred yards beyond Swansea’s main shopping area to find No 13. As classy as it is unpretentious, this restaurant’s menu of entirely home-cooked food exhibits a greedy passion for flavours from around the world. Meals are colourful, generous & often imaginative – start with smoked goose breast on an oriental noodle salad, then follow with mussels in a spicy chorizo sauce with crisp, oversized, hand-cut chips. For local ingredients look to a starter of seafood soup or a main course of salt marsh lamb with root vegetable mash & port, redcurrant & rosemary jus. Winter desserts might include a cockle-warming rice pudding with Calvados-soaked currants & a topping of spicy caramelised Bramleys. The setting is slick but relaxed with slate & wood floors & modern art on pale walls, while service is charming & knowledgeable – & with the Grand Theatre just over the road, this is an ideal place for pre-theatre eats.
