SquareMeal Review of
Muddle and Swing
The name says it all: muddle (as in mixed drinks) and swing (as in 1920s-1960s jazz) hold sway at this attitude-free retro cocktail bar. Under the colour-burst chandeliers you can chill to Chet Baker while sipping fairly priced Daiquiris, Spritzes, Slings, Fizzes and Old Fashioneds. More modern creations also appear – the likes of Porn Stars and Espresso Martinis – made with premium spirits that include a creditable selection of gins. Charcuterie, meat, artisan cheese and sushi boards help absorb the alcohol without making you too full to dance – to the likes of Ella, Billie, Dinah, Peggy and similarly sassy swing-out sisters. The basement party pit (open until 2am at weekends) ups the tempo with jive and jitterbug, and is also available for private hire. In summer, the sun-trap garden is a draw, and its flora is used to flavour or garnish coolers, cups, Pimm’s and punches at this laid-back little lounge.
